Mercedes-Benz invests 350 million euros to extend its factory
The German company Mercedes-Benz has invested 350 million euros (just over 58,000 million pesetas) in the extension and modernisation of its plant in Vitoria, thereby completing the first phase of expansion. It produces 400 vehicles for the export market in two shifts per day and employs 1,300 workers. In 2003 it will start production of a new model of van that will replace the current models.
The German company has allocated 112 million euros (18,635 million pesetas) to finance the new infrastructure. The new assembly plant is located at the southern end of the factory and covers 81,790 square metres. Its design is an innovative U shape that enables major cost reductions. The assembly line has also been modernised with new robots and automated systems.
The other 40,000 million pesetas that the company will invest in the Vitoria plant will be for the extension of paint shop and a new storage area of painted bodywork sections. These projects, together with the recently inaugurated assembly plant, complete the first phase of expansion programmed by the Management.
The new facilities will mean that 400 vehicles per day can be produced, working two shifts. Until the new model is implemented the production of the Vito and Class V will continue. The plant currently manufactures 90,000 Vito and Class V models a year. The new van will be launched in 2003.
Building work has also begun on a Suppliers Park, representing an addition investment of 16,000 million pesetas, in which 6 companies will have permanent operations. This will enable faster and more efficient communication between Mercedes-Benz and its main suppliers when production of the new vehicle begins in 2003. Located near the new assembly plant, the park covers 21,000 square metres and 10 million euros have been invested in its construction.
In addition to the new assembly plant, the paint shop has been extended (27.600 m2) and a building called "Karola" has been constructed as a bodywork store. Covering 2,610 m2, it can house 348 vehicles (distributed in four rows, with automatic elevators up to 5 levels).
Mercedes-Benz, therefore, has prepared the plant that will manufacture its new model in 2003.
