>Hi Joeri,
>riding a 220cdi auto I avoid the rev region over 3500rpm. Usually my transmission shifts around 2500-3000 rpm and delivers fairly acceptable acceleration. Only in kick-down mode (I suspect that is what you mean with power mode - the only selectable mode in my cases is Winter or Normal) the engine reaches up to 4000 rpm. However the rev counter is obviously the same for gasoline and diesel engines, goes up to 7000 rpm and is therefore quite inaccurate for exact readings...

My '97 110D has 3 modes : winter - normal (down 1500rpm ; up at 3000rpm) and power (down 2000 ; up 3500rpm). I am rather unsatisfied with the kick-down function as it seems to downshift 2 gears at once and hitting the rev-limit immediatly that way .

One more situation where the transmission "spins" is when you decelerate quite strong and then want to accelerate quickly again : the transmission seems to disengage letting the engine rev free. Can you confirm this ??

>I can't tell you the difference 200 and 220 cdi, as this was never a concern for me. Anyhow, you want save any fuel with the smaller engine, but loose comfort! I tested the 2.5TDI VW Caravelle (the stronger 150hp version is not available with auto trans.) in comparision to the V220CDi and was disappointed from this weak engine...

I actually ment a comparison between the old 110D (2300cc) and the new 112cdi (2151 cc).
My experience with the T4 wasn't as good either. Returning form ski-holiday last march the engine broke 1 hour from home ( blew the head-gasket) . It was a 102HP tdi with only 80.000 km. My vito has 234000 km and has never left me stranded. My opinion on the T4 : good side : engine ("revvy")
down side : getting old - not as pretty
road holding ("tips over")

Thank you for your opinion,
